Final Fantasy “The Sky” by Yoshitaka Amano
Yoshitaka Amano may not be a household name, but the series he helped shaped the visual style of very much is; none other than Final Fantasy.
Known for its wispy lines and vibrant use of colour, Amano’s influences include early Western comic books, art nouveau, and Japanese woodblock prints - the latter very clearly seen emerging through these scans here.
Amano may not be as involved in the series as he was pre-Final Fantasy X but, thankfully, his beautiful art lives on through most of the series’ box designs.
These scans come from the highly exclusive artwork collection Amano has curated called “The Sky.” If like me you missed the original boxed edition of “The Sky,” never fear; a less exclusive slipcased version is headed to bookshops for £54 in August 2013.

As the photo set on Gravity Rush was so popular last time around, I thought I would post this original concept video for Gravité, as it was then called.

Originally being developed for the PlayStation 3 by Sony’s Japan Studio as far back as 2008, the game ended up landing on the PlayStation Vita instead last year. Fortunately, that fantastic musical score also ended up in the final game’s soundtrack.

Mirror’s Edge has a beautifully stark dystopian graphical style, so surely it’s only fitting that its concept art is strikingly utilitarian.
While most concept art aims to convey a graphic style or game personality, Mirror’s Edge developers DICE took a more functional approach, opting for a step-by-step exploration of the gameplay itself.
